Academic and Educational Objectives of the Department of Civil Engineering and Regional Design

The Department of Civil Engineering and Regional Design seeks to develop independent engineers with the following skills and abilities.


  1. Possess sufficient knowledge, experience and technical ability with regard to social infrastructure development and regional design.

  2. Able to identify various domestic and international regional issues on their own and take a leadership role in efforts to solve them.

  3. Retain a concern and responsibility for community service, and actively engage in activities that lead to benefits for society as a whole.

The ideal student at the Department of Civil Engineering and Regional Design (admissions policy) has the following characteristics.


  1. Someone who is interested in solving issues in a variety of regions both in Japan and abroad, and who want to be glocally active.

  2. Someone who is passionate about learning the techniques of social infrastructure development and regional design, and possesses the broad, fundamental academic ability to do so.

  3. Someone who feels a responsibility to serve and bring benefits to society as a whole.

The academic and educational objectives (Diploma Policy) of the Department of Civil Engineering and Regional Design are as follows.


  1. Acquired basic knowledge of human beings, society, and diverse regions.

  2. Acquired the common literacy related to science, technology and regional design.

  3. Acquired communication skills to communicate with diverse entities.

  4. Acquired a sense of ethics as an engineer involved with social infrastructure development and regional design.

  5. Able to understand the basic theories of natural science and specialized basic knowledge for the development of social infrastructure.

  6. Able to apply and develop expertise to practical issues in social infrastructure development.

  7. Able to grasp global trends in social infrastructure and to develop technologies globally.

  8. Able to propose appropriate measures to resolve problems arising from social infrastructure development.

  9. Able to steadily implement social infrastructure development and measures in an appropriate manner.

Out of these, A to D are part of the common curriculum in the School of Regional Design, while E to I are studied at the Department of Civil Engineering and Regional Design.
All of the subjects taught at the Department of Civil Engineering and Regional Design are tied to these academic and educational objectives. The grades for each semester's coursework are combined to provide a concrete numerical value for the achievement of each academic and educational goal. It allows students to reflect on their learning activities for the semester and helps them revise their learning plans for the following semester.
The department expects students to pass the first Professional Engineer examination, the JSCE-approved civil engineer (level 2) examination, the national civil service examination (general positions), and the examination for local higher civil servants.
