Academic and Educational Objectives

The academic and educational objectives of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at Utsunomiya University are as follows.

  1. Acquire common literacy in science and technology.
  2. Acquire communication skills to communicate with diverse entities in the community.
  3. Acquire knowledge of human beings, society and culture, and regions.
  4. Cultivate the ethical sensibility required of architectural and regional design engineers.
  5. Acquire the ability to understand the mechanisms of natural phenomena and apply them to architectural and regional design techniques.
  6. Acquire the ability to understand the requirements and conditions of humans and society, and to conceive buildings, regions, environments, and institutions.
  7. Acquire the ability to conceptualize resource utilization and construction processes and realize them in the form of architecture and community development.
  8. Acquire goal-oriented architectural and regional design skills with respect for history and culture.
  9. Develop a balanced sensibility between engineering and regional design studies and art and culture.

1 to 3 are positioned as "basic competencies for engineers in general" and 4 to 9 are positioned as "professional competencies for building engineers."

The Department of Architecture and Urban Design underwent and passed the JABEE accreditation review in 2006. This does not mean that each individual graduate of the course is reviewed, but rather that the educational program offered by the Department of Architecture and Urban Design is reviewed. Those who graduate from the Department of Architecture and Urban Design will automatically be considered “world-class” architectural engineers. The accreditation was not renewed in 2011, but the same educational program continues to be offered.

The Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (JABEE) is a non-governmental organization that examines and accredits engineering education programs in close cooperation with technical academic associations. JABEE was created to ensure the international equivalence of engineering education in Japan by accrediting engineering education programs at universities of science, technology, and agriculture based on uniform standards and by enhancing the quality of education. In simple terms, JABEE is an organization that examines the quality of education, and passing JABEE accreditation means that the quality of the education is guaranteed.
